Thanks PS,

I figure we have to start somewhere. I know Ripon College (Wisconsin) has a bike-sharing program too, and we know that places with crazy hot and/or cold weather still bike (Chicago was in the news this year), and the folks in Portland deal with lots of rain, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

For myself, I haven't really been 'bike commuter guy' through any bad weather yet - just haven't been doing it long enough. From what I can tell, winter-time bike riding does drop off significantly, so I'll be curious how much or little I ride in winter (not that California winters are rough). :)

My alma mater has started a bike-share program of sorts...

http://www.wsaw.com/schools/headlines/27632449.html

I remember hearing that there used to be a yellow bike program on campus, but it wasn't in place while I was in school. I'm all for it and I would have used the shared bikes, even though I lived right across the street from campus.

The idea of bikes replacing cars is fairly ludicrous in my opinion, however. Students aren't going to give up their cars. Many work off campus and a bike isn't a viable option during Wisconsin winters. But during the 7-8 months of good weather, this would be a great program.
